Global Corporate Intranet
Creating a cohesive strategy for the intranet was an extensive and ongoing project to create, document and manage global intranet web site standards for layout, interaction/interface and brand consistency. Need to coordinate and negotiate ongoing standards/guidelines/tips for an international audience.

SITUATION

  • Intranet was several years old and information was not being shared well (corporation is a roll-up of many smaller companies)
  • need to create a set of guides to build intranet guides
  • determined a portal environment would be soon, need to mimic a technology that will eventually be available
  • intranet research generally very situational, no public press available


METHODS

  • interviews of employees throughout world, inventory and usage patterns
  • used internal focus-group methodology to quickly assess roles/needs
  • created mockups to sell concepts with business



RESULTS

  • Created framework and design standards to accommodate 10+ languages, 5 business units, and dozens of corporate and local services.
  • Established an operational team included knowledge managers, information architects, visual designers, content managers, and site managers
  • Provided ongoing maintenance and improvements based on usability studies, feedback and technological advances in content management tools.
